Metro Vancouver said that in the summer and early fall, water use can double from the rest of the year for swimming pools, growing food, maintaining sports fields, and other uses.

New lawn sprinkling regulations come into effect in Metro Vancouver on Sunday as water use ramps up.

However, a lot of water is also used to green lawns and wash decks or driveways. Because of that, the summer lawn sprinkling restrictions will be in effect from Sunday to October 15.

Residential lawns at even numbered addresses can be watered on Mondays, Wednesdays and Saturdays (4 a.m. to 9 a.m.), and for odd numbered addresses on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Sundays (4 a.m. to 9 a.m.). For nonresidential lawns, sprinkling is allowed at even numbered addresses on Monday and Wednesdays from 1 a.m. to 6 a.m., and at odd numbered street addresses on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 1 a.m. to 6 a.m. All nonresidential street addresses can water Fridays from 4 a.m. to 9 a.m.

In addition to lawn sprinkling regulations, outdoor car washing and boat washing can only be done using a hose with springloaded shut off; golf course operators are requested to cut water use on fairways as much as possible; and artificial turf and outdoor tracks are hosed for health and safety only.

Cemetery lawn operators must adhere to the nonresidential sprinkling times.
